How have service bureaus changed over time?
In the early days of 3D printing, bureaus gave customers access to hardware, materials and skills without their own investment. That let sectors such as consumer goods, automotive and medical use the technology early, and it helped build confidence at a time when awareness was a main barrier. Since then the work has widened from prototyping to functional parts, tooling, one-off components and full series manufacturing.
What role do they play with technology suppliers?
Bureaus and contract manufacturers also work closely with hardware, material and software providers. They give feedback on bottlenecks, take part in material qualification and help develop applications. In some cases they have worked directly with materials companies to qualify new feedstocks.
What types of service provider exist?
Following the VoxelMatters Directory, the market splits into four groups. Global service networks link jobs with qualified local manufacturers through online platforms. Application-agnostic providers serve many industries with a broad range of processes and materials. Application-specific providers focus on one field, such as aerospace, and sometimes add consulting. AM factories run large, highly automated fleets of industrial printers and can produce customised parts at scale.
What is planned at Formnext 2026?
Formnext takes place from 17 to 20 November 2026 at Messe Frankfurt, organised by Mesago Messe Frankfurt GmbH. Registered service companies cover design and engineering, prototyping, fixture manufacturing, part manufacturing and consulting. Formnext Vice President Christoph Stüker says service providers help companies evaluate applications, optimise designs and scale production.
